The flame was lifting away from the port and blowing itself out. Wrong orifice from an earlier install, plus a partly blocked port. He corrected both and checked the pressure at the manifold.

Grease was dripping back off the baffles onto the range. The blower was undersized for a long run up through a hill house, and the damper had stuck. He replaced the damper and set the speeds properly.
